Institute for Advanced Research in Humanities and Social Sciences Invites Professor Zhang, Long-xi to Give Lectures

The Institute for Advanced Research in Humanities and Social Sciences of NTU is to hold its second lecture.Professor of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics Dr. Zhang, Long-xi(張隆溪) from Hong Kong’s City University is invited to be the guest speaker.

Venue:
Lecture Hall of NTU’s East Asian Classics and Culture Research Program ( 1st floor on the yellow building behind the general classrooms).

Time & Topics :
January 4th (Thursday), starting from 10: 30 a.m. Topic: Basic Concepts of Semiotics.‥ At 2:30 in the afternoon, Professor Zhang will lecture on: " Classics, Authority, and Cultural Tradition‥. And on January 5th, at 10: 30 a.m., Professor Zhang will talk about "Language, Art, and Appreciation of Beauty"‥.

Professor Zhang was born in Chengdu of the Sichuan Province. In his early years he experienced the trials and tribulations of the Great Cultural Revolution. Through arduous self study he was admitted to Beijing University and studied under Professor Chu Kuang-tsien(朱光潛), with special tutoring from Mr.Chien Chung-shu(錢鍾書). After graduation he received a scholarship from the Yenching Society of Harvard, went to Harvard for graduate study and received his doctorate in Comparative Literature. Later he taught at the Riverside campus of the University of California, and subsequently taught as a Chair Professor at the University of Toronto. His research interests include: Chinese Classical Literature, English Literature, Comparative Studies of Oriental and Occidental Literature and Culture. All interested parties are welcome to attend his lectures.
