NTU’s main library produced its first historical documentary film “The American Aid and Mr. Valery Sergei de Beausset” and held its premiere showing in the International Conference Room on May 17^th from 2 p.m. to 3:20 p.m., followed by a panel discussion from 3:30 p.m. to 4:40 p.m. Those who attended the occasion had the unique opportunity to experience the add-on values of the NTU libraryarchives in a fresh way.

The American aid was instrumental in the reconstruction and economic development of post-war Taiwan. The aid was principally channeled through an American engineering consulting company called J.G. White Engineering Corporation. Mr. Valery Sergei de

Beausset was the managing director of J. G. White Corporation from 1950 to 1957. Over a year ago, NTU’s library happened on “The de Beausset Archives” which had a lot of historical data relating to the American aid during the 50’s. This archive gave rise to the library’s decision to try a different way to augment its archival add-on values.

This documentary film was based on the newly found archival materials to relive Taiwan’s past history, depicting the American aid in the 50’s and how it was used to help Taiwan’s economic development. Mr. de Beausset’s personal career involvement in the project was also described in detail. The film talked about Taiwan’s economy during the initial period after the Restoration, the background for the American aid, the first four year construction plan, and introduced Mr,Beausset’s concepts for the planning of economic development of Taiwan and the concrete examples of his involvement.

The “de Beausset Archives” contained historical documents relating to the American aid and Taiwan’s reconstruction, a 16 millimeter color film, slides and photographs, and recordings of Mr. de Beausset’s dialogues. NTU’s documentary film also hascontents on the senior statesmen who were involved with the reconstruction, experts and scholars of economics discussing the American aid and Mr. de Beausset. Overall, it is a profound documentary that abounds in historical and cultural values.
