Congratulations!! Department of Bio-Industry Communications and
Development Senior Miss Wang-Jung Cheng Won the Bronze Medal
in the 400 Meters Medley in Swimming in the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games

Miss Wang-Hung Cheng, a senior in the Department of Bio-Industry Communications and Development, won the bronze medal in the 400 meter medley in swimming in the Guangzhou Asian Games with a score of four minutes and 41.55 seconds. This bronze medal was particularly significant for the Chinese Taipei Asian Games delegation, because it was the first medal in swimming won by the Taiwanese delegation since the 1988 Asian Games in Bangkok 12 years ago.

Ever since she started to represent National Taiwan University in swimming contests, Miss Wang-Jung Cheng has won numerous glories. For three consecutive years she participated in the National Collegiate Sports Meet, and won 12 gold medals, 4 silver medals, and broke 13 General Assembly’s records (of the Sports Meet), and one national record. Her performance was nothing short of amazing. In 2009, she participated in the East Asian Games held in Hong Kong, and won the championship in 400 meter individual medley, which was the first gold medal for Taiwan in its history of participating in the East Asian Games.

In addition to Miss Wang-Jung Cheng’s outstanding performances, Mr. Cho-Yi Chen, a doctoral student from the Institute of Genome & Systems Biology, was also a member of the Chinese Taipei delegation, participating in the 50 meter breaststroke swimming contest. Mr. Chen graduated from the Department of Information Engineering, got his master’s degree from the Institute of Bio-medical Engineering, and is now a first-year doctoral student in the Institute of Genome and Systems Biology. Mr. Chen has always been among the top graders in his class, but he never gave up swimming because of his academic workloads. This year he represented Taiwan to participate in the Asian Games. As he was the only doctoral student in the whole delegation, he set a shining example for others. Both Miss Wang-Jung Cheng and Mr. Cho-Yi Chen are students of National Taiwan University. Their achievements in swimming prove the NTU spirit of pursuing excellence in academics and sports.

Under the strong support from President Si-Chen Lee, our school swimming team has been one of the prioritized sports teams of our university since 2008, with a view toward cultivating athletes for participating in the Asian and Olympic Games and rewriting the national records. After two years of strenuous efforts, the NTU Swimming Team has won 35 gold medals, 33 silver medals, and 15 bronze medals in the 2009 and 2010 National Collegiate Sports Meets! In terms of future planning, our school swimming team aims to focus on international sports exchange as its development goal, hoping to foster more athletes to win glory for our country, and bring the standards of Taiwan’s swimming to the top of the world!!
