NTU Opening Ceremony: “Where Creativity and Dreams Take Flight”

The first prize of the 2016 Call for Ideas, "Blank Space", work of alumni Lin Dan-Wei, Ko Ya-Chih, and Chang Tsai-yen from the NTU Institute of Building & Planning, whose concept was integrated into the second-stage tender document as the basis for the planning and development of the Square.
On February 2nd, 2021 at 1:30pm, the opening ceremony of National Taiwan University's Dr. Chen Wen-chen (陳文成) Incident Memorial Sqaure was held, with guests from the Dr. Chen Wen-chen Memorial Foundation, NTU Administration, NTU Student Association, NTU Graduate Student Association, NTU Student Congress, as well as other concerned individuals in attendance.
During the March 21, 2015 NTU Affairs Meeting, a resolution proposed by student and faculty representatives was passed which stated that the square between the Department of Library and Information Science, the First Student Activity Center, and the Multi-Purpose Classroom Building would be named the "Dr. Chen Wen-chen Incident Memorial Sqaure" and that a memorial plaque be erected. A selection committee for the Memorial Square plaque was established in 2015, and in 2016, a Call for Ideas for the creative design of the Square was launched in hopes that the overall design concept and improvement of the square would encourage more people to visit. The first prize of the competition, "Blank Space", is the work of alumni Lin Dan-Wei (林丹威), Ko Ya-Chih (柯雅之), and Chang Tsai-yen (張彩燕) from the NTU Institute of Building & Planning, whose concept was integrated into the second-stage tender document as the basis for the planning and development of the Square.
At the NTU Affairs Meeting on January 5, 2019, the environmental improvement plan for the Dr. Chen Wen-chen Incident Memorial Sqaure project was passed and subsequently implemented on campus. To complete the project, the Dr. Chen Wen-Chen Memorial Foundation, the NTU Department of Mathematics, the NTU Student Association, and the NTU Graduate Student Association jointly raised funds, and on February 17, 2020, a representative from the Dr. Chen Wen-Chen Memorial Foundation donated TWD $11 million for the project. After a year of hard work, the Square was successfully completed on schedule and will provide an excellent environment that will be of great benefit to school activities and learning.
