NTU Students and Teachers Display Creativity to Win “Dragon Smile Competition”:
3D Photos Developed by Electronics Institute Team Take First Place

Sponsored by The Acer Foundation and The Chinatimes Cultural & Education Foundation, the inaugural “Dragon Smile Competition” took place from the end of last year to the end of September and set a record for the biggest cash prize in a collegiate competition. Against a field of 147 teams, the team led by NTU Electronics Institute Professor Chen Liang-Gee took first place and the cash prize of 2 million NTD, with their entry “Emotion 3D Spirit.”

According to Professor Chen Liang-Gee, who already has over ten years of experience leading students in digital audio visual research, “Emotion 3D Spirit.” covers a lot of new technical and conceptual grounds. “By using a single lens and auto-focus, then calculating a 3-dimensional image, any current camera equipped with our new Software or Integrated Circuit can become a super 3D camera capable of taking 3-Dimensional Images. This is applicable for hand-held cameras, television, or even movies.” Not only did the NTU team address the entry’s innovation and practicality, they also elevated the value of a knowledge-based economy in the Taiwanese industry by combining the fields of high-yield products, techniques, business models, and brand-name marketing.

Winning the inaugural “Dragon Smile Competition” demonstrates NTU’s excellence and innovation in academia and research while symbolizing the tight integration between NTU and the industry.
