E.E. Building No.4, Department of Electrical Engineering's new research building, held its inauguration ceremony last Thursday (January 11th, 2007) at 9 a.m. at the' intersection of Zhoushan Road and Changsing Street. President of NTU, Dr. Si-chen Li, Chairman of BENQ Corporation, Mr. Li Kun-yao and many distinguished guests jointly cut the ribbons for the newly completed construction. NTU's faculty and students, together with the attending guests witnessed the birth of this new Hall.

In the mean time, BENQ Foundation also donated a bronze sculpture named “the Ladder” to the Department. This piece of public art utilizes the circular arch as its main structural element (the circular arch being a major feature of NTU's architecture), allowing four identical components by way of different heights and angles to form a multiple rhythmic appearance. It is understood that this piece of bronze sculpture embodies an attitude toward problem solving that is honest, unbiased, just, integral, and taking one step at a time.

The total donation for the E.E. Building No.4 amounts to N.T. 300 million. Amid recent years' economic recession and the inflation of construction materials, the departments and units within NTU had to make an all-out effort to overcome all kinds of obstacles to bring the project into fruition. The design stage alone took a year and a half to complete. And it wasn't until the beginning of this year that the building was ready for use. The College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is scheduled to take over the allocation of space after it assumes ownership of the new building. Altogether there will be 15 laboratories and 30 graduate student carrels inside the building to provide students with a better learning platform.

And a whole floor will be appropriated as laboratories and research space for the College of Electrical Engineering to interact with BENQ and AU Optronics(AUO), allowing industry to link up to the knowledge resources inside the universities, while providing students with an opportunity to understand the needs and features of the industry.
