In collaboration with the Graduate Institute of Building and Planning, NTU's Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences invited University of Hawaii Professor Renigold Yin-Wan Kwok to give an open lecture and a panel discussion on June 1^st, focusing on topics such as "Can China co7ntinue its miraculous growth?" and "Hong Kong's Politics and Economy before and after the 1977 Reunification with China." During the lecture and the panel discussion, Professor Kwok raised profound observations toward the so called "miraculous growth" phenomenon of China.

Professor Kwok maintains that behind China's rapid development, there are potential negative factors that should be taken into consideration, such as the overall burden on the environment, international energy issues and the issues of social stability, which need to be dealt with carefully in the path of China's sustained development. Furthermore, the one-child policy which has been implemented by the government since 1979 has resulted in the aging and shrinking of the population, and poses enormous challenges in China's future development.
