Department of Bio-Industrial Mechatronics Teams Defend Their Title in the Utechzone Machine Vision Contest and Win Double Championship

Two competing teams, comprised of students from the Department of Bio-industrial Mechatronics, participated in the 2nd Utechzone Machine Vision Contest since last May.

During a four month span, these two teams beat their competitors from the preliminaries to the finals, and emerged victorious among many teams which were composed of university and college students from both sides of the Taiwan strait and industry elites.

The first team, "StandBIME" took the first prize in Group A and beat the other 14 competitors for problem solution regarding detection of defects in equipments' outer appearance by scoring 86.67% in its correct rate, and 29.73% in its misjudging rate. The second team, "BIME KMA", on the other hand, beat 22 competitors and won the first prize in Group B for problem solution regarding hardness inspection by scoring 5.80% in its misjudging rate and passing the inspection test within 1 second.

Last year, students from the same department participated in the 1st Utechzone machine vision test and won the first prize and beat 35 competitors from other universities and industry elites in Taiwan in Group A's problem solving category regarding detection of defects in equipments' outer appearances. This year the students from the Department of Bio-Industrial Mechatronics successfully defended their title and won double championship. Naturally their amazing feat attracted widespread attention.

The Utechzone Machine Vision Contest is organized by the Automatic Optical Inspection Equipment Association (AOIEA), consigned by the Utechzone Co., Ltd., and co-organized by the Economic Daily News and the Chinese Society of Image and Graphics. The purpose of the contest is to encourage equal emphasis on academics and practice in the machine vision field, entice the machine vision field to invest in the industrial applications of automatic optical inspection, thereby establishing a solid footing for related enterprises.

Guided by Professor Ta-te Lin, the StandBIME and BIME KMA teams are composed of 7 students from the Department of Bio-Industrial Mechatronics and two research assistants. The competition for this year's contest was very fierce, with many university teams participating from China, including the University of Tienjin. By their superior capability in innovation and program design, coupled with their high team spirit and tenacity, the two teams from the Department of Bio-industrial Mechatronics were able to beat many competitors and win double championship. Such a feat is truly hard to come by and therefore worthy of congratulations from us.
