NTU Professors Won Academic Awards from Ministry of Education

The members of Ministry of Education's Council of Academic Reviewal and Evaluation cast their ballots for the 13th National Chair Professor Award and the 53rd Academic Award at the beginning of this month. NTU's list of winners is as follows:

The National Chair Professor Award:
Department of Mathematics Professor Chin Lung Wang
-(category of mathematics and natural sciences)
Department of Medicine Professor Mei-Hwei Chang
- (category of biology, medicine and griculture)
Department of Electrical Engineering Professor Liang-Gee Chen
- (category of engineering and applied sciences).

A total number of 13 candidates won the Academic Award. NTU's winners are:
Department of Chemistry Professor Jim-Ming Fang
- (category of mathematics and natural Sciences)
Department of Economics Professors Kong Ping Chen and Shin-Kun Peng
-(category of social sciences)

Professor Chen and Peng are jointly hired by NTU and Academia Sinica.

Department of Electrical Engineering Professor Ming-Syan Chen
- (category of engineering and applied science.)
Professor Chen is jointly hired by NTU and Academia Sinica.

In order to reward academic research , to raise the standards of teaching, and to encourage the universities to develop their own special characteristics, the Ministry of Education specifically set up the National Chair Professor Award and the Academic Award, under which are subsumed five categories, i.e., humanities & art, social sciences, mathematics and natural sciences, biology, medicine and agriculture, engineering and applied sciences.

Of these awards, the category of humanities and social sciences can have up to 2 winners, whereas the other categories can have 3 winners at the most. The term for the National Chair Professor Award is three years, during which the universities are required to provide the winners with the necessary resources for their research, and the Ministry of Education gives them a subsidy of N.T. 1 million dollars every year (N.T. 500,000 as personal reward for the winner and N.T. 500,000 as research funding). The winners of the Academic Award, on the other hand, receive N.T. 600,000 in cash prize and an honorary certificate. For this year, there are 27 entries for the National Chair Professor Award and 83 entries for the Academic Award. The winners underwent an extremely rigorous selection process to come to the fore. The Ministry of Education is scheduled to hold a joint award presentation ceremony at the end of this year and to produce a special winners' profile album to honor the winning candidates.
