Congratulations! NTU Student Wan-Jung Cheng Won the
First Swimming Gold Medal in the East Asian Games for Taiwan

Miss Wan-Hung Cheng, a junior at the Department of Bio-Industry Communication and Development, won the gold medal in the 400 meter individual medley finals of the East Asian Games held in Hong Kong on December 10th. With a stunning score of 4 minute and 40.21 seconds , she beat the athletes from other nations and broke the record that has been overhanging in the Ease Asian Games for 16 years plus the national record and snatched the gold!! For Taiwan's sporting fans, this god medal bore particular significance since it was the first swimming gold medal in Taiwan's participation in the East Asian Games.

Miss Wan-Jung Cheng has won many honors in swimming ever since she joined NTU. For two consecutive years she participated in the National Collegiate Sports Meet, and has won 7 gold medals and 4 silver medals for NTU and broke 10 of the General Assembly's records. Her performance is nothing short of impressive. In the Asian Swimming Championship Games held in Guangzhou not too long ago, she won the gold medal in 200 meter individual medley , and that was also Taiwan's first gold medal in the Asian Swimming Championship games!! Through her accomplishments in swimming, Miss Wan-Jung Cheng proves the NTU spirit of pursuit of excellence and being adept at both academics and sports

From the year 2008, and under the support of President Si-Chen Lee, the NTU swimming team has become a prioritized sports team for our university. In the key points of the Focused Development Plan unveiled for 2010, the long term goal of training for the athletes are defined as follows:

  1. Train the athletes so that they can participate in international tournaments such as the Asian Games and the Olympics.
  2. Rewrite the national record, and the record of the National Collegiate Sports Meet.

Professor Ying-Che Huang, leader of the swimming team, coach Professor An-Tung Hsu and teacher Chien-Ju Lin trained the NTU athletes for a year, and in this year's National Collegiate Sports Meet our athletes won 26 gold medals, 17 silvers, and 7 bronzes, making this year the single year in which our swimming team glimmer with gold!! And Wan-Jung's stellar performance in the East Asian Games greatly boosted our morale, making us confident that we can score again. In terms of planning for the future, the swimming team will promote more international exchange programs so that more athletes will win glory for our nation, and the standards of Taiwan's swimming will be among the best in the world.
