NTU Department of Ocean Science and Ocean Engineering’s Professor Tony Wen-Hann Sheu honored with the 2011 Taiwan-France Science and Technology Award

Professor Tony Wen-Hann Sheu of NTU and Professor Marc Thiriet of Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris (UPMC, also known as Paris VI University) are the dual recipients of the 2011 Taiwan-France Science and Technology Award, created jointly by Taiwan’s National Science Council and France’s Academy of Sciences (Academie des sciences).

On November 11, 2011, both recipients personally participated in an award ceremony held at the Academy of Sciences in Paris. On November 23, Dr. Michel Ching-lung Lu, Taiwan’s representative to France, also held an award ceremony in their honor. The award commends them for their research cooperation of the past 12 years, their remarkable academic accomplishments in mathematics and computer science, their efforts to facilitate international student exchange by holding courses for students of the two schools, and for holding Taiwan-France academic conferences.

The prestigious award was given to them for their research on biofluid modeling and simulation.

Their research focused on the structural development of mathematical modeling of acupuncture and an acoustics-thermal-fluid coupling model for predicting the temperature of liver tumors.

They have focused on mathematical modeling of the clinical results of radio frequency ablation (RFA) in liver tumors in recent years, as well as on high-intensity focused ultrasound therapy (HIFU).

In the future, the pair will collaborate with NTU's Center for Advanced Study in Theoretical Sciences (CASTS), which is directed by Academician Chang-Shou Lin (who is responsible for NTU's Taida Institute for Mathematical Sciences, TIMS) and Academician Shih-I Chu (who is responsible for NTU's Center for Quantum Science and Engineering, CQSE), as well as with Laboratory of Jacques Louis Lions, which is directed by Yvon Maday. Through this collaborative platform, they will build an acupuncture mathematical model and its associated multi-scale simulation of fluid-structure interaction in the hopes that they can clarify the physiological and scientific concepts at the core of Chinese medicine and acupuncture theory.
