The 2012 Taiwan Outstanding Women in Science has just been announced with the fiercest competition of great candidates from international academic institutes and research centers around the world. To be specific noted for National Taiwan University, Professor Grace Chu-Fang Lo of NTU College of Life Science received the award for her outstanding contribution along with another great scientist, Dr. Bon-Chu Chung of Academia Sinica. Dr. Bon-Chu Chung has been working on the research area of the gene mutation of steroid hormones and the gene regulation, having done a lot of contribution for the medical practice. Meanwhile, Professor Grace Chu-Fang Lo’s research interest on WSBV (white spot bacilliform virus) has earned her an international reputation of improving the aquaculture biotechnology in Taiwan. As well, Wu Chien-Shiung Scholarship Foundation just established the scholarship within the Taiwan Outstanding Women in Science for the first time, and the winner goes to Wei-Chien Yuan, the PhD student from NTU Institute of Biochemical Sciences of College of Life Science. Wei-Chien Yuan has been doing well with the great academic performance and has experiences of publishing in the international journals within only three years of research work.

Professor Grace Chu-Fang Lo’s research interest on WSBV (white spot bacilliform virus) has earned her a worldwide reputation of improving the aquaculture biotechnology in Taiwan. Professor Lo has been working on this research area with the study of gene function ever since the early 1970s. She applied the study of Baculovirus to practice her research and experiments of gene function in the medical field. In 1994, the damages from the great incident of the death in aquaculture biotechnology around the whole world inspired and prompted Professor Lo to work on the study and the research of Crustacean diseases and immunology. To be specific, her devotion to working on the research of WSBV (white spot bacilliform virus) has improved the aquaculture biotechnology a lot in Taiwan. Professor Chung’s publication has also made her academic research the spotlight in the international journals around the world. So far, her research paper has been quoted over 2,031 times, and four of her articles were evaluated as the frequent resources in the research field of Plant and Animal Science according to ISI.

In addition to the great academic performance, Professor Lo has also integrated the academic website, analysis platform, the database, and the updated research development to improve our international research working on the field of crustacean diseases in the aquaculture industry. She’s been showing her generosity by providing researchers around the world with her professional approaches and materials, making Professor Lo’s laboratory the reference laboratory according to the World Organization for Animal Health. Moreover, Professor Lo has a very good connection to the international aquaculture industry and the related biotechnology industry, which have made her experiment results transferred and contributed a lot to the society by assisting the corporations to develop the detection technique for WSBV (white spot bacilliform virus). Indeed, she’s been doing great contributions with her great research to improve the industry for a better society.

The 2012 Taiwan Outstanding Women in Science: Taiwan Outstanding Women in Science is founded by Wu Chien-Shiung Scholarship Foundation along with the corporation with L'Oreal Taiwan and National Women’s League of the R. O. C and this great honor has been held over five times ever since 2008. Taiwan Outstanding Women in Science aims to honor great scientists and to memorize the educational devotion and the scientific research of the former Professor of National Yang Ming University. As well, Wu Chien-Shiung Scholarship Foundation just established the scholarship within the Taiwan Outstanding Women in Science for the first time, and the winner goes to Wei-Chien Yuan, the PhD student from NTU Institute of Biochemical Sciences of College of Life Science. Taiwan Outstanding Women in Science is the first great honor specifically for women only in Taiwan, and the awards of Taiwan Outstanding Women in Science have been recognized and viewed as one of the most influential and the highest honor in the scientific field in Taiwan.

Wei-Chien Yuan has been doing well with the great academic performance and has many experiences of publishing in the international journals within only three years of resea rch work. Her research interest of KLHL20 protein and its transferring to PML Nuclear Body is a great discovery for the medical field.
