Signing the Sustainable Donation Contract for the LeCosPA in National Taiwan University and Celebrating the Opening Ceremony of the ARA Observatory in NTU Historical Gallery

Two significant ceremonies were just held on June 21st in NTU Historical Gallery: signing the sustainable donation contract with Quanta Computer Inc. for the LeCosPa (Leung Center for Cosmology and Particle Astrophysics of National Taiwan University) and the opening of the ARA (Askaryan Radio Array) Observatory in memory of the National flag on the peak of the Antarctica. It means a lot to National Taiwan University, especially when it was the 100th anniversary of reaching the Antarctic peak in human history and also the 100th birthday of Taiwan last year.

By giving the speech for the opening ceremony, NTU President Si-Chen Lee stated that the donation from Quanta Computer Inc. is based on the passion for fundamental science and the craze for knowledge other than the corporation donation for the fields of electronic engineering and business management for a practical use before. There are more to be explored in the whole universe when it comes to the research field of cosmology and astrophysics. So far, we human beings have only discovered 5% of the components in the whole universe. With the full financial support from Quanta Computer Inc., the sustainable management of Leung Center of Cosmology and Astrophysics makes it possible that National Taiwan University can definitely be the leading position in the field of cosmology and astrophysics, guiding the whole human society to the world of the unknown with more exploration and knowledge.

As one of the NTU Outstanding Alumni Award Winners, Chee-Chen Leung, the viceo CEO of Quanta Computer Inc., first donated NT$ 2.5 billion to National Taiwan University to set up Leung Center of Cosmology and Astrophysics in 2007, and then has been promoting this LeCosPa center by providing the sustainable donation in order to prompt more grand scientific projects in the field of cosmology. Last December, the scientific project of the ARA Observatory in the Antarctica, led by Professor Pi-Sin Chen, made Taiwan and the NTU research team famous around the world. Chee-Chen Leung donates NT$ 5.7 billion to the LeCosPa center in hopes that National Taiwan University can keep up the good work of being one of the pioneers in the research field of cosmology and astrophysics in order to guide the human beings to a prosperous future with more exploration and knowledge. Leung has been paying attention to the research fields of physics for it has always been his favorite, even though he’s graduated from NTU Department of Physics forty years ago and now works in corporations. Also, he misses the days when he used to work on the making of telescope with his NTU peers back in school ages. The whole universe leaves a lot of imagination to we human beings, and thus it makes scientists crave for the unknown. He anticipates that this donation can definitely be a good beginning to prompt more scientific projects and to help researchers in the fields of physics, cosmology and astrophysics achieve more and explore more to obtain the great knowledge from the immense universe.

Chee-Chen Leung, the NTU outstanding alumni award winner, the co-founder of Quanta Computer Inc., the vice CEO and the executive, has been promoting National Taiwan University to be the top university with the prominent reputation in the academic field of astrophysics by having donated the LeCosPa (Leung Center for Cosmology and Particle Astrophysics) ever since 2007. Over the past four years, the LeCosPa has already achieved a certain prominence in the international academia. There have been several experiment projects successfully presented by the LeCosPa, including ARA Observatory, the first established observatory of cosmic neutrino on the peak of the Antarctica. This observatory is the significant scientific project in the Antarctic, where Taiwan has finally accomplished such an experiment for the very first time there over the past 100 years. Furthermore, Mr. Chee-Chen Leung has just announced that he decided to donate NT$5.7 billion to National Taiwan University in order to promote and to give the full support to Leung Center for Cosmology and Particle Astrophysics for more academic achievement. The total number of the Quanta donation for Leung Center for Cosmology and Particle Astrophysics of National Taiwan University includes a research building, which cost NT$3.5 billion, and the sustainable fund, that cost NT$2 billion. It made this the headline news that for the very first time the academic field of astrophysics has ever received the biggest donation. And thus, this was reported with the cover story by the mass media.

While giving the speech for the ceremony, Professor Pi-Sin Chen, the dean of the LeCosPa center, stated that the research team of the ARA Observatory is currently developing two antenna stations buried under the thick ice field in the Antarctica in the location where they established the detection site for cosmic neutrino. Hence, the NTU research team will definitely leave for the Antarctica this year. Meanwhile, National Taiwan University also work with the research teams from the United States, Russia, and other nine countries for the project of UFFO (Ultra Fast Flash Observatory), which is expected to be ejected to the outer space from the middle Asia next year in April. So far, we human beings have only discovered 5% of the components in the whole universe. With the full financial support from Quanta Computer Inc., the sustainable management of Leung Center of Cosmology and Astrophysics makes it possible that National Taiwan University can definitely be the leading position in the field of cosmology and astrophysics. Even though there have been some innovative breakthrough in the research field of cosmology around the world, the other 95% of the components in the universe can only be defined as the dark matter and the dark energy, with very little understanding for we human beings, according to scientists’ work over the past twenty years. The components of the universe have always been the myth for we human beings. In 2005, even the international journal, Science, selected the top 125 questions among the scientists around the world while celebrating the magazine’s 125th anniversary in the publishing industry. And of course, the first top question went to the topic of “What constitutes the universe?” It is thus undoubtedly to say that cosmology is the focus in this century. Hence, there have been more and more research institutes, related to the field of cosmology and astrophysics, established among top universities in hopes they can be the dominant figure to lead the other scholars and scientists around the whole world.

In order to promote the scientific projects in National Taiwan University to make it top university with the prominent reputation in the academic field of astrophysics, Chee-Chen Leung, the NTU outstanding alumni award winner, the co-founder of Quanta Computer Inc., the vice CEO and the executive, thus donated the Leung Center of Cosmology and Astrophysics in 2007. Being the largest manufacturer of notebook computers in the world, Quanta Computer Inc. has already been ranked as one of the top 500 corporations in the world, approved and announced by Forbes, the magazine with the great prestige. He anticipates that this donation can definitely be a good beginning to prompt more scientific projects and to help researchers in the fields of physics, cosmology and astrophysics. This donation made National Taiwan University one of the very few universities equip with the research institute of the cosmology and astrophysics.

In honor of the donation from Leung, National Taiwan University thus held the grand ceremony in the NTU Historical Gallery to celebrate and to show gratitude to the sustainable donation by signing the contract for the Leung Center of Cosmology and Astrophysics. As well, the opening ceremony was also held to honor the outstanding ARA Observatory in the Antarctic, especially when it was the 100th anniversary of reaching the Antarctic peak in human history and also the 100th birthday of Taiwan last year. With the suggestion of NTU President Si-Chen Lee, the NTU Historical Gallery will keep the national flag, the very first R.O.C. national flag ever appears in the Antarctica, deliberately illustrated by Professor Pi-Sin Chen from the Antarctica in honor of his outstanding contribution exploring the research fields of cosmology and astrophysics.
