2006 Distinguished Liberal Courses
Interpretation and Analysis of Chinese and English Poetry

By introducing carefully selected Chinese and English poems and
comparing different cultures inside them, this course aims to
inspire students to love and appreciate the spirits of poetry,
and trains students' ability to think critically. |
Turning Points In History
Instructor:
Prof. Ku Wei-Ying

From ancient times to the present day, both Chinese and foreign, there are many important turning points in history, including the Graeco-Persian War, the rise of Christianity, the Renaissance, the Age of Exploration, the Enlightenment, the relationship between China and Taiwan in modern history…and so on. The course helps students recover the pleasure of studying history from these extensive and meaningful historical events, and to proceed to the next step, by helping students understand how to handle historical knowledge from these key persons and events. |
Physics and Human Civilization

Research
results in physics greatly affect the development of
civilization, and moreover, they interpret how the cultural
environment affects the advancement of physics. The contents of
this course cover important findings in the field of physics and
also . discusses the influences of these findings in the future.
By explaining profound theories in simple language, the course
helps students from different backgrounds understand the
development of physical technology. |
Evolution and Extinction Of Life Through Time
Instructor:

This course interprets the
beginning of life as well as its diversification. Not limited by
the explanation of life history, the course focuses on forming
modern historical points of view and world perspectives. Both
"historical facts" and related theoretical discussion about
evolution are emphasized in the class. |
Plants and Food
Instructor:
Prof. Liu Li-Fei
(Department of Agronomy) |
Advancement in agriculture greatly affects change in civil
society and human culture. In this course, students learn more
about the interdependent relationship between human and plants.
In addition, different interactions between plants and human
society will be discussed. From the plants' characteristics to
the natural environment, from the history of plants to the
social and economic position of the modern society, diversified
topics make this course interesting. |
