"1st Taiwan International Students Soccer Festival" closed out its games amidst great jubilation. Foreign students from 25 nations displayed their dexterous footwork; international cultural exchange moved one giant step forward.

   1st Taiwan International Students Soccer Festival", organized by NTU Center for International Academic Exchanges, NTU Foreign Students' Association and NTU International Student Information Service, achieved its intended goals after two day's agenda. Despite the torrential rains during the first day and the scorching sunshine in the second day, athletes from participating universities compared their skills during the matches, established lasting friendship, and promoted international cultural exchange.

  After fierce preliminary eliminations, the Team from National Chengchi University won the championship, whereas the much favored Taipei University of Technology Team won the second place (the team was comprised mostly of students from Gambia).

  The Mingchuan University Team and the Fu Jen Catholic University Team, won the 31rd place and the 41th place respectively. The most memorable and impressive moment during the matches was the penalty kick shootout between Taipei University of Technology Team and the Mingchuan University Team, in which Taipei University of Technology beat Mingchuan University by a score of 4 to 2.

  The process was full of climactic moments which brought incessant applauses from the audience. Although the NTU foreign students team did not make the top four, it nevertheless scored the highest number of goals in a single game ( a total of 7).

  Foreign students who participated in the games said, playing soccer in a downpour on a muddy playground was truly tiresome, but also much fun. They thanked the organizing agencies for their thoughtful arrangements which gave them opportunities to compete with other schools and make new friends. The Ambassador from Gambia , His Excellency Ambassador Mawdo C. Juwara was present at the games to root for his national athletes. And he also attended the evening party to award prizes to the champion and the 1st runner-up.

  In addition, President Tsu-Tien Lee and many faculty members from Taipei University of Technology came to watch the games, altogether the event was an unprecedented success.

  NTU Center for International Academic Exchanges, made a point to thank the participating athletes from various universities and the internal support from inside NTU, for making the games smooth and perfect.

  "1st Taiwan International Students Soccer Festival" was the first of its kind held in Taiwan. Foreign students from universities of Northern Taiwan which include Chinese Culture University, Fu Jen Catholic University, Mingchuan University National Chengchi University, National Taiwan University of Technology, National Taipei University of Technology, and Soochow University, etc., were invited to participate in the matches. These foreign students came from Europe, Asia, Africa, America, representing 25 different countries.

  Because President Li of NTU was on official assignment and could not attend the event in person, he asked Vice President Chen to officiate at the opening ceremony and the kick-off. This event successfully conduced to the cultural exchange between foreign students and Taiwanese students. At the closing ceremony held at the second student activity center on May 6th, the participating athletes, the volunteer workers and foreign students of NTU gathered together, everyone had a terrific time, and all looked forward to a reunion next year!
