In Pursuit of Excellence, En Route to the Top
Eleven NTU Professors Won Ministry of Education's National Professorship Award and Academic Award, Bringing the University a Distinguished Honor!

The Council of Academic Reviewal of the Ministry of Education recently announced this year's roster of winners for its academic awards. NTU faculty makes up the majority of the winning list, wherein eleven professors win MOE's "National Professorship Award" and the "Academic Award", demonstrating once again the outstanding academic achievements of the University!!

The MOE National Professorship Awards are given to ten hosts of various academic projects every year. Of these ten awardees, NTU faculty takes up a majority by having six professors among the list of winners. In the category of social sciences, NTU Department of Economics Professor Hong Hwang comes to the fore in a horde of contenders. Professor Hwang's studies focus on the strategic trade policies in international commerce, and deal with the issues of location choice of manufacturers in industrial economics. Over the years he has published more than eighty theses in academic journals both at home and abroad. In the 1980's Professor Hwang already made innovative contributions in the area of international trade theory, and had an important paper published in "American Economic Review," which was universally recognized as the leading journal of economics at that time. Whether in teaching or in leading research teams, Professor Hwang has consistently exhibited stellar performance. Under his guidance, the NTU Trade Workshop published more than twenty quality papers in domestic and international journals.

In the mathematics and natural science category, three NTU professors are selected as winners. They are: Professor Pi-Tai Chou of the Chemistry Department, Professor Chiun-Chuan Chen of the Mathematics Department, and Professor Sun-Lin Chung of the Geosciences Department. Laying his research foundation on experimental physical chemistry and biophysical chemistry, Professor Chou had made achievements in the study of the spectrum of electronic excited states and response dynamics in the early years. From 1994 on he started to conduct research on high speed optical chemistry and light-emitting materials. In 2001 he successfully integrated related topics in optical, electrical, and magnetic fields and added the application of nano-materials in biomedicine and photonics to his research. These eminent performances made him become the unsurpassed leader of interdisciplinary studies in the chemical circle of Taiwan. Since 2003, Professor Chou has more than 100 papers published in the top journals, thus becoming world-class both in quality and in quantity.

Professor Chiun-Chuan Chen earned his doctoral degree from the Institute of Mathematics of NTU. After graduation, he served as a post-doctoral research fellow at the Institute of Mathematics of Academia Sinica, and also taught at the Department of Mathematics of National Chung-Cheng University. In 1996 he returned to his alma mater and taught at NTU. His research areas focus on the elliptical motion equations, the Boltzman equation, and Navier-Stokes equation. His many honors include the National Science Council Outstanding research Award, the Young Mathematician Award from the Taiwan Mathematical Society, the Academic Award from the Ministry of Education, and the Silver Medal of the Morningside Award for Chinese mathematicians.

Professor Sun-lin Chung earned his doctoral degree from the Institute of Geosciences of NTU. He is now a professor by special appointment at the Department of Geosciences of NTU. His academic expertise lies in geo-dynamics and igneous petro-genesis. He is a member of the American Geological Society and has won the Outstanding Research Award from the National Science Council and the Academic Award from the Ministry of Education. His research website is at : http://rock.gl.ntu.edu.tw/home.htm

In the category of medical and agricultural science, Professor Chu-Fang Lo from NTU's Insitute of Zoology took the crowning honor. Professor Lo now serves as the Dean of the College of Life Sciences. Her area of specialization lies in the study of white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), which is a common disease found among shrimps and endangers the global shrimp breeding industry. Professor Lo not only studies the disease itself, but also studies the methods of infection and the means to control its spreading. Her research lab is now recognized as the authority on WSSV, and the focus of her research is laid upon function genomics of virus-host interactions. Professor Lo now also serves as the Chairman of the WSSV study group of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses. In addition, she is on the editorial board of the DCI magazine (2008-2011), and is also the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of AFS-FHS, and host of the reference lab of shrimp disease studies of World Animal Health Organization. At present Professor Lo continues her commitment to the study of WSSV molecular pathogenesis.

In the category of engineering and applied sciences Professor Soo-Chang Pei from the Department of Electrical Engineering won the laurels. Professor Pei is an acknowledged pioneer in digital processing technology. His researches in the areas of digital filter design, discrete digital signal transfer, and the filtering, identification, compression and quantification of color images are well received both at home and abroad. In recent years Professor Pei made prominent achievements in his efforts to promote digital image processing education. Under his planning, the course on "color image processing" met the needs for future multi-media application and talent cultivation in a timely manner.
