Congratulations to the Prize Winners of
the 16th National Professorship and the 56th Academic Award

The Ministry of Education has just announced the 16th National Professorship and the 56th Academic Awards. The professorship holders and the award winners include NTU professors as the followings:

There are three NTU professors among the eight professorships holders of the 16th National Professorship established by the Ministry of Education:
“Liberal Arts”: Professor Chun-Chieh Huang of NTU Department of History
“Mathematics and Natural Science”: Professor George Wei-Shu Hou of NTU Department of Physics
“Engineering and Applied Science”: Professor Liang-Gee Chen of NTU Department of Electrical Engineering

There are four NTU professors among the 11 award winners of the 56th Academic Award established by the Ministry Education along with the National Professorship:
“Liberal Arts”: Professor Kuo-Liang Yeh of NTU Department of Chinese Literature
“Social Science”: Professor Ming-Hui huang of NTU College of Management
“Mathematics and Natural Science”: Professor Jung-Kai Alfred Chen of NTU Department of Mathematics
“Biology and Medical and Agricultural Science”: Professor Lee-Ming Chuang of NTU Graduate Institute of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine

According to Ministry of Education’s regulations governing the establishment of National Professorship and National Award, these two honors are set up to support academic developments, enhance teaching and research qualities and encourage universities to develop their own strengths. There are five sections divided based on their academic fields of National Professorship and Academic Awards: “Liberal Arts”, “Social Science”, “Mathematics and Natural Science”, “Biology and Medical and Agriculture Science”, “Engineering and Applied Science”. Under each respective section, one Review Board is set up, in which nine to eleven prestigious scholars and experts are invited to act as the Board members. Among the five sections, there shall be a quota of two holders for each of the sections of “Liberal Arts” and “Social Science”, and three for each in “Mathematics and Natural Science”, “Biology and Medical and Agriculture Science”, “Engineering and Applied Science”. The term of the National Professorship is three years. Those who elected as the National Professorship for two times have the life-long honor of National Professorship holders shall no longer be recommended or selected. And an Academic Award recipient should not be recommended again. In addition to the required resources provided by the university to the National Professorship holders, the Ministry of Education grants NT$ 1 million to each National Professorship holder. The grants are allocated as the follows: a maximum of NT$ 500,000 for the personal grants to each holder of National Professorship and another prize of NT$ 500,000 for the teaching research funds, including the expenses for the assistants, operating costs, transportation, facilities and the like. As for each award winner of the Academic Award, the recipient can be granted the certificate of honor and NT$ 600,000. There are 34 case applying for the 16th National Professorship and 78 cases applying for the 56th Academic Award. Hence, all the recipients stand out of the great scholars to win this honor approved by the Ministry of Education along with their strict regulations governing the establishment of National Professorship and Academic Award. It is scheduled that by the end of this year the Ministry of Education will hold a ceremony to honor the award winners with their albums made for each to document their great academic achievements.
