National Taiwan University, Hon Hai Group’s YongLin Healthcare Foundation, and Varian Medical Systems signed a memorandum on May 27, 2014, embarking on a collaborative journey towards cutting edge cancer research and treatment. The collaboration follows a NT$ 15 billion donation from Hon Hai Chairman Terry Guo (郭台銘) to NTU in 2007 to establish the NTU Cancer Center, which is distributed to the construction of a cancer hospital and a biomedical engineering hall.
During the signing ceremony, NTU President Pan-Chyr Yang (楊泮池) stated that the biomedical engineering hall is soon to be inaugurated, while construction of the cancer hospital is expected to be completed in 2017 as according to schedule. President Yang added that the NTU Cancer Center has bestowed upon itself the goal of becoming the number one biomedical cancer research and therapy center in the Chinese-speaking community in Asia and Southeast Asia, and with proton therapy playing a critical role in cancer treatment, the foundation’s additional donation of Varian’s proton therapy system shall greatly contribute to this goal.
Varian Medical Systems is the world’s leading manufacturer medical devices for treating cancer while Hon Hai Precision Industry Company is the world’s first-rate provider of technology services. Joint with NTU’s research energy, the collaboration offers a three-way win for the industry, the academia, and for medical research in Taiwan as well as in the Asia-Pacific region.
According to Chairman Guo, the memorandum includes a purchase agreement in which YongLin Healthcare Foundation shall donate Varian’s proton therapy system to the NTU Cancer Center for deployment. In the future, the system will be utilized for clinical radiotherapy as well as research purposes in the hopes to provide a more advanced cancer treatment for cancer patients all around Asia.
