By these four criteria, Webometrics tried to assess the academic influence of universities in the internet market. The official website of National Taiwan University ranked 159th globally, and 4th in Asian countries, surpassed only by Japan's Tokyo University and Keio University and Singapore's University of Singapore. As far as browse rate is concerned, NTU's website won first place among all university websites in Taiwan.

The official version of the website was established as early as before 1996. With the increase in the number of users and the diversification of its contents, the original web space was found to be insufficient, so every once in a while a new version was installed. The current version was administered by the Secretary General Mr. Fu Li-Chen and the E-team led by Director of Computer and Information Networking Center Mr. Chen Hsin-hsi, officially launched in August of 2006.

Director Chen Hsin-hsi of the Computer and Information Networking Center believes that there is a high correlation between NTU's academic influence, its leading position, and the popularity of its website. Secretary General Mr. Fu Li-chen, on the other hand, adopts the user-oriented concept, leading the E-team members to divide the website users into five categories: new students, old students, faculty and staff, visitors, and alumni. According to the needs of the users, the E-team members provide second layer webpages to expand the scope of service. Owing to the increased functionalities, more and more users are willing to log onto NTU's website on a regular basis.

In addition, NTU's BBS "Palmarama" played a pivotal role in boosting the traffic on NTU's website. According to an analysis by Alexa (http://www.alexa.com), NTU's BBS contributes about 10% to the popularity of NTU's website, second only to the home page (which contributes about 14%). The rest are about evenly spread among the pages related to course contents and other functionalities, including NTU's main library, the virtual museum, and on-ine courses. All of these also enjoy relatively high browse rates.
